چکیده

In man and in subhuman primates the paresis produced by lesions of the motor cortex is variable in respect of rate and of extent of ultimate recovery of motor power, Clinically various factors influencing recovery are recognized, such as the size and nature of the lesion and its location in the cerebral hemispheres, but the extent of recovery is generally unpredictable. In an experimental study these factors can be analyzed more precisely, and it is the purpose of this paper to present the results of such a study of the problem carried out on monkeys from which the various parts of the excitable motor regions of the cortex were extirpated. The regions removed were the motor and premotor areas, i.e., area 4 and area 6 a (upper part) of Vogt’s modification of Brodmann’s architectonic map of the cercopitheque brain (1, fig. l), Following extirpation observations were made on the rate and degree of ultimate recovery of motor power. The effects produced by such lesions were found to differ strikingly in the infant monkeys from those seen in adult animals.

Purpose: This study is designed to determine the sex difference in volume of precentral cortex of left hemisphere in right-handed normal subjects and the right-handed subjects which are suffering from Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 72 normal human brains (38 males, 34 females), 11 human brains suffering from Alzheimer (4 males, 7 females), ...

Comparing the Effectiveness of Mindfulness and Aerobic Exercise on Psychological Factors and Sleep Quality Following Recovery from COVID-19

Background and purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic have led to some psychological disorders and sleep problems that should be taken into account after recovery. After recovering from COVID-19 people are at risk of sleep disorders, depression, and low quality of life and there is paucity of information about this issue. The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of mindfulness and aerobic ...

dysphagia in acute ischemic stroke

Introduction: Swallowing dysfunction complicates acute strokes in 25-32% of cases and directly affects patientschr('39') prognosis and recovery. Dysphagia complicates the course of acute strokes through its potential of the development of chest infection, nutritional problems, and dehydration.  Dysphagia is also an independent predictor of respiratory morbidity and mortality in acute stroke. In...

The parietal lobe as an additional motor area; the motor effects of electrical stimulation and ablation of cortical areas 5 and 7 in monkeys.

Patients having destructive lesions of the precentral motor cortex (area 4) due to tumor, degenerative processes, or surgical excision always retain a considerable amount of useful movement of the contralateral extremities. However, the ability to perform delicate and fine movements is lost when the precentral motor cortex is destroyed, the remaining movements being more gross and usually confi...

Decreased thickness of primary motor cortex in primary lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) is a rare form of motor neuron disease characterized by upper motor neuron dysfunction. Because pathologic examination has revealed a loss of neurons in the motor cortex of patients with PLS, we sought to confirm and extend this finding by using MR imaging to measure cortical thickness. METHODS Seven patients with PLS and 7 age-matched ne...
